I opened up a new box of cereal for breakfast this morning … and as I did, the thought popped into my mind: “What’s the point of life?”
So, after breakfast I carried the box outside, set it on a rock, and took this photo for the blog.
What’s the point of life?
The point of this Life cereal is to sustain hubby and me for our day. It nourishes us and gives us the energy we need to get though our morning.
But it won’t last forever. The energy from this Life cereal will wear off around noon.
Neither will this box of Life cereal last forever. Eventually, after a few weeks, it will run out.
I mentioned a few blog posts ago that hubby and I flew down to Southern California for a quick weekend getaway. While we were there, there was a VW bus “car show” occurring on the pier. It was very entertaining!
Hubby and I had a great time walking around and seeing all the many different VW buses. Some were configured to have little kitchenettes in them. Others simply had bench seats like normal buses. In the photo below you can see one VW bus which had been converted into a “truck” … while the one behind it was completely decked out with a Marvel Superhero theme.
One VW bus was designed as a safari-type open-air vehicle, with a “bamboo” palm-leaf roof. Here you can see a Coke classic themed VW bus.
The VW buses were lined all the way to the end of the pier … and they even filled up the parking lot adjacent to the pier. There were hundreds of VW buses!
In thinking about the question, “What’s the point of life?” … is the point of life to line ourselves up next to everyone else and to show off how good we have “fixed ourselves up” … like this VW car show?
Our lives are all different and unique … just like all the VW buses at the car show were completely different and unique.
Is the point of life to make sure our life looks better than the next person??
Is the point of life to make sure our life is decked out the best … the coolest design on the pier?? The best paint job?? The best stereo system??
Of course VW buses aren’t known for speed … but what about car shows which feature cars of speed? Is the point of life to show off how our life is smoother, slicker, and can go faster than everyone else’s??
That our job is better than everyone else’s. We’re involved in more activities than everyone else. We can travel to more fabulous places than everyone else. We have a better house … or more houses … or in better locations than everyone else. We have more stuff than everyone else.
Is that the point of life??
And so I come back around to the photo of the box of Life cereal … on a rock, in the sunshine, surrounded by weedy summer growth. The energy provided by the cereal won’t last forever. The box of cereal won’t last forever. In fact, the weedy summer growth in the background won’t last forever … it will only flourish for this summer season, then it will be gone.
The point of life? – It is to nourish and pour life-giving energy into the people around us. Just like the cereal nourishes and gives energy, so that hubby and I can make it through our day. Just like the weedy summer growth gives oxygen to the air, and food for the deer, and home for little bug creatures.
My two kids are dealing with grief and loss. The father of their very closest friends has just been diagnosed with a very aggressive form of brain cancer. This family is like a second family to my kids. This couple is like a second mom and dad to my kids.
This father poured life into my kids! He was a mentor and an example for them! He poured wisdom into them. He has been speaking life into my kids since they were very small children.
This is the point of life!
This is a life well-lived!
A life that is lived for others … encouraging others … strengthening others … drawing others closer to God!
This is the point of life!
