Sunflowers for the soul

Sunflowers for the soul

This week’s blog posts have been a bit heavier than normal  …  about working through grief.  I had hesitated to share these thoughts.  Afterall, the blog is entitled “Daily Blessing” and that means it’s supposed to always be upbeat and positive and happy.  Right??

Not necessarily.

I’ve found that some of the most meaningful input into my life has been when people have shared about their struggles … and how God helped them through.

We all go through struggles.  We all go through low valleys, when we question everything we’re doing and wonder why our life even matters.

No matter how low the valley … or how high the mountain … or even the long boring slog of a journey in between … God has given us the gift of relationship to help us through!

First off, God gives us the gift of relationship with someone who is a “safe place” for us.

We all have someone who is a “safe place” for us.  Someone who knows us better than anyone else.  Someone to whom we can pour out our heart … and who understands what we are trying to say, even though our words might spill out as a confused jumbled mess.

Not only that, God Himself is a “safe place” for us.

God knows us better than anyone else!  He is our “safe place” to whom we can pour out our heart!  He understands what we are struggling with, even though our thoughts are a confused jumbled mess and words won’t even come!

When it comes to that someone in our life who is our “safe place” … they know just how to comfort our heart and encourage us to hang in there and keep going.

God as our “safe place” knows better than anyone else how to comfort our heart and encourage us when we are going through a low valley.

Throughout my life I have found myself in different discouraging low valleys … and many of those times I have asked God directly and specifically to please send me some encouragement.  And He always has!  Every time!

Last week, as I was doing some grief work in my soul, I was so distracted by the swirl of emotion that the thought never occurred to me to ask God for some encouragement.  Yet God!  God is so loving and kind!  God is my “safe place”!

God sent several different, uniquely specific encouragements to speak comfort to my heart, and to heal the hurting places in my soul.  I will call these “sunflowers for the soul.”

Just as that someone who is our “safe place” might give us a bouquet of flowers if we are sad or discouraged or simply to show their love for us … God’s encouragements to my soul were a bouquet of “sunflowers for my soul.”

I will not share all of God’s “sunflowers for my soul” but I will share one … God gave me a new song.  It isn’t actually a brand-new song, but it was new to me.

And while I recognize that those who read this blog might not even like this song, I will share it anyway … because it was God’s gift to me.  God’s gift of “sunflowers for the soul” are always uniquely specialized for each individual person whom God loves and cares for.

What gift of “sunflowers for the soul” has God given you?

In what ways has God comforted your heart in your lowest valley?

Hallelujah for Every Broken Heart
By:  Crowder

There is a grace in the rise and fall.
There is return for everything we’ve lost.
There will be moments when the beauty’s gone.
There is a power when we’ve lost it all.

There is a place where redemption cries.
There is a death that can save a life.
There’s resurrection where there was a cross.
There is power when we’ve lost it all.

Hallelujah for a broken heart.
Hallelujah when I’m falling apart.
There’s a sun rising when the sky is dark.
I’m singing, Hallelujah for a broken heart.

Don’t be afraid of every crooked turn.
What sorrow plants in the graves and dirt.
Jesus uses all the pain and hurt.
There is power in the way He works.
Oh, there is power in the way He works!

Hallelujah for a broken heart.
Hallelujah when I’m falling apart.
There’s a sun rising when the sky is dark.
I’m singing, Hallelujah for a broken heart.

Why should I worry?
Why should I fear?
Every heartbreak is drawing me near.
I need You more now than I ever did.
I’m thanking You Jesus.
I’m thanking You Jesus!

Hallelujah for a broken heart.
Hallelujah, I can trust You God!
I’m singing, Hallelujah for every broken heart.
