I had the coolest experience this morning! I was sitting at the dining room table sipping my hot coco for breakfast as the sun was creeping up over the Cascades Mountains. The birds were singing their joyful morning songs, and if it had not been 39 degrees I would have gone outside to listen to them. (it seems that just this week the birds have started returning!)
Then through the window I noticed a bird call which was different. Sure enough, it was distinctly different!
I must see what kind of bird that is!
So, regardless of the 39 degrees, I stepped outside and turned on my Merlin Bird ID app. The recording started picking up bird, after bird, after bird, etc. …. The new distinct call I was hearing was a “Varied Thrush.”
Wow! That’s really cool!
The Pacific Wren was trilling away … then a Dark-eyed Junco joined in! I was absolutely thrilled! I had never heard of a Dark-eyed Junco before, until I joined the social media platform of Substack … where a lady whom I am “Subscribed” to has been sharing the most wonderful photos of Dark-eyed Juncos all winter long. This lady is in Kansas, so I just assumed that little bird only was in her area. But lo and behold, it comes to my area too, in the Springtime! That is so exciting!!
Oh wow! A Spotted Towhee! I have never heard of this bird before. My Merlin Bird ID app highlights the bird in yellow when it is hearing that bird’s song. I was intrigued to pinpoint the Spotted Towhee’s song in amongst the chorus mix!
Each Spring our forest comes alive with birdsong! In the past, it’s always been a jumbled conglomeration of music! But now, with my Bird ID app, I can actually discover the different musicians in the Morning Sunrise Chorus! Check it out …

So many different musicians! I was in awe!
Each singing joyfully, and each having their own unique solo spotlights. Far away in the valley came the faint call of Canadian Geese. Blending into the background was the little hummingbird which frequents our hummingbird feeder.
Oh, and there’s the song of the big, red-crested Pileated Woodpecker!
And a few seconds later … oh there’s the Northern Flicker Woodpecker!
Here is a video recording which I made last March, of the Morning Sunrise Chorus! This video is 38 seconds long. Enjoy!

“My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music with all my soul. Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples.
“For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, and let your glory be over all the earth.” – Psalm 108:1-5
