You never know what you will discover when going through boxes of old slides.
Check out these patterns we came across …

(and check out the prices … 5 cents, 25 cents, 50 cents)

There was a whole stack of patterns, but these were my favorites.
These patterns are only 2 generations removed, but it feels like we live in a completely different universe. Today, if we need clothing, we simply open up our cellphone, scroll through a vast array of endless clothing options … with a click of our finger we can purchase whatever clothing items we would like, and the next day it shows up at our doorstep. We don’t even have to leave the house!
It’s almost hard to comprehend the effort and hassle of having to go to the fabric store and search through racks & drawers of patterns in order to find a pattern you like.
Then having to pick out fabric for the clothing item you would like. Picking out fabric for clothing is hard! (in my personal opinion) It’s important to select the correct fabric type, the correct color that would work good with the pattern, and the correct designs on the fabric (plaids & stripes are tricky to work with).
Then you have to take the heavy bolts of fabric to a cutting table and wait your turn in line to have the correct lengths of fabric measured and cut for the sewing project.
And … you can’t forget all the extra necessities: spools of thread (in the correct colors to match the fabric), buttons (which will correctly match the fabric), zippers, facing, etc.
Then … once you get home you have to cut out the pattern pieces. Then you must correctly lay out the fabric (with just the such-and-such folds) … pin the pattern pieces to the fabric, and cut the fabric out according to the pattern pieces (and hope you don’t accidentally mess it up and cut wrong!)
Then you need the patience to pin the random fabric pieces together in just the such-and-such way. And you need the patience to sit down and actually sew the pieces together. (without getting your thread tangled or knotted up … or breaking a sewing machine needle as you sew over the pins!)
Then … you need the patience to use your seam-ripper to take out all the stiches you just sewed because you accidentally did it wrong!
My, how things have changed!!
The way we get our clothing has drastically changed since the 1960’s.
Clothing styles have drastically changed since the 1960’s.
Fabrics have drastically changed since the 1960’s.
Automobiles have drastically changed since the 1960’s.
Telephones have drastically changed! Communication in general has drastically changed!
Just about everything has drastically changed!
So too, church services have drastically changed since the 1960’s. In today’s modern churches, the coffee station is a prominent feature in any church lobby. Coffee is vitally necessary! Was coffee available in the lobbies of churches back in the 1960’s?? I have no idea. Was coffee as vitally necessary for the congregants of the 1960’s?? I wonder??
What people wear to churches nowadays has drastically changed! Worship styles have drastically changed! The worship songs we sing in church are drastically different!
God’s Word is now opened up on people’s cellphones, and pastors preach from ipad tablets.
But one thing is for certain – God’s Word has not changed!
The patterns God has given for humanity to live by … they have not changed!
Several thousand years ago, God gave Moses patterns for his people to live by:
* God is the one and only God! There is no other God.
This has not changed.
* Do not worship anything other than God. Do not let your heart be drawn away to worship power, prestige, popularity (aka: “Likes” & “Subscribers”), praise & affirmation. Do not let your heart be drawn away to worship possessions, wealth, or what wealth will get for you. Be faithful to worship God alone!
This has not changed.
* Do not misuse God’s name in a flippant, disrespectful, or profane way.
This has not changed.
* Life is sacred. Do not take innocent life.
This has not changed.
* Marriage is sacred. Sex is for marriage and marriage alone.
This has not changed.
* Stealing is wrong.
This has not changed.
* Lying is wrong.
This has not changed.
* Comparison with what other people have is a trap which will lead to discontentment, jealousy, and envy. Comparison is wrong. Toxic competition due to jealousy & envy is wrong.
This has not changed.
When it comes to purchasing clothing online and having it delivered the next day – vs. patterns & sewing skills – I have to say I’m thankful things have changed!
I’m thankful to live in this time, right here right now, where God has placed me. Ours are times of great change!
But in the chaos and swirl of all the change of our modern times, I’m thankful for the bedrock stability of the fact that God does not change!
God is the same yesterday, today, and forever! We can count on it! We can rely on it! God does not change – ever!
“I the LORD do not change.” – Malachi 3:6
