Little hummingbird on my front porch

Little hummingbird on my front porch

Hubby opened the front door to leave for work first thing in the morning  …  and there on the front porch, next to our welcome mat, was this little hummingbird.

Poor little thing!!

Is it still alive??

Yes!

The little hummingbird didn’t stir at all, but its little body was heaving up and down with its breaths.

Hubby headed off to work, and I got down on my hands and knees to take the above photo.   But I was so worried the little hummingbird might not survive that I deleted the photo right away.

Would it survive??

“God, please don’t let the little hummingbird die.” I prayed.

We have a hummingbird feeder on our front porch.  Most likely what happened was the little hummingbird was probably sipping away at the feeder when another hummingbird came zooming up.  The little hummingbird probably darted away from the feeder at top speed, flying directly into the siding of the house  …  and landed, stunned, on our front porch.

A few days ago, I shared the quote:  “Moms give their kids roots to grow and wings to fly.”

It’s an inspirational thought, but let’s face it – life is hard!   Sooner or later life smacks us up side the head!

And even though we’ve given our kids “wings to fly” …  sometimes our own precious “little birds” wind up smacked up side the head by life!    And just like the little hummingbird on my front porch, our own precious “little birds” lie there stunned on life’s “front porch”  …  unable to stir  …  barely breathing.

I went out to check on the little hummingbird about an hour later.   It hadn’t moved.   Its little body was still heaving with each breath.

Oh, but wait a minute!   It had moved.   It had moved about ¼ inch from where it had originally been lying.

That means it had given a little flutter!

Hope!

The little hummingbird had given a flutter!

I went back into my deleted photos on my phone and retrieved the photo I had taken.   There was hope for the little hummingbird after all!

About an hour later I stepped out to check on the little hummingbird again  …  and it was gone!   It had flown away!

Relief flooded over me!   The little hummingbird was ok!

And so, the same thing happens to our own precious “little birds” [aka: our kids].   Life smacks them up side the head and leaves them stunned.   But it’s not the end.   Our “little birds” give a flutter!   And another flutter!

It might be a process.   It might take time.

But eventually our “little birds” take to the air once again.

This is life.

We all have been smacked up side the head by life.

We all have had hard, difficult seasons where we have found ourselves on life’s “front porch” lying there stunned.  Unable to think  …  unable to process  …  unable to move.

But it’s not the end.   We’re still breathing.   That counts for something!   We just need a bit of time.

We give a flutter.   And another flutter.

It might be a process.   It might take time.

But eventually  …  we too take to the air once again.

God is watching over us!   Just like God was watching over the little hummingbird on my front porch.

God is taking care of us!   Just like God took care of the little hummingbird on my front porch.

“What is the price of two sparrows – one copper coin?  But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it.  And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.   So don’t be afraid;  you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.”  – Matthew 10:29-31

You matter to God!

God cares about you!

God is watching over you!
