Knocked down … but shining anyway

Knocked down … but shining anyway

A few months ago my son sent me this photo of the light in his apartment complex.  His comment was:  “It might be knocked down … but it’s shining anyway.”

Yesterday’s blog post was about how life is messy.  If we are going to truly care about people and genuinely love people, then it is going to be messy.   It is going to be inconvenient.   It will require self-sacrifice.

In the process we will probably find ourselves, at times, feeling a lot like this light in the photo … knocked down … in the dark … in the mud … in the rain.

When we pour ourselves out to love on people there absolutely will be moments when we feel this way.

But keep shining anyway!

“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.  …  All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.  Therefore we do not lose heart.”  – 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, 15

“For our momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.  So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.  For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”  – 2 Corinthians 4:17-18

“I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”  – Matthew 25:40
