Joyful “firsts!”

Joyful “firsts!”

It’s May 1st … and the hummingbirds are sharing the feeder together!

I had wondered if they would share the feeder together again this year. This is a “first” for this year!

Yay for joyful “firsts!”

And … the Rufous Hummingbirds are back! I realized they were back again when I noticed a little hummingbird at the feeder flaring its tail-feathers in defense, as another little hummingbird “buzzed the tower” in the background. Their tail-feathers have a bold white patterning along the edge whenever they flare their tail-feathers.

Yay for first sightings!

Rufous Hummingbirds are feisty and full of sass! It’s always fun each Spring whenever they are around! The mild Anna’s Hummingbirds have their competition cut out for them! But it seems everyone gets plenty of turns at the feeder. So, I guess they must share equitably.

Yay for joyful “firsts!”

I just heard a brand-new bird as I was sitting outside in the sunshine – a Hutton’s Vireo! Exciting!

According to allaboutbirds.org, Hutton’s Vireo is a small songbird of the Pacific Coast. It lives in conifer woodland forests and forages for insects high in the trees. A fascinating fact is that they do not migrate. Hutton’s Vireo Overview, All About Birds, Cornell Lab of Ornithology
