Jesus in Joshua

Jesus in Joshua

In our background photo for today a beautiful paradise awaits just beyond the gate.  Brilliant sunshine beckons … just beyond the gate.  Glimpses of the Pacific Ocean can be seen … deep blue waters stretching far away to the horizon.   There is anticipation of sweeping panoramic views … views of dramatic volcanic ridges and breathtaking beauty!   Of glorious sunrises!   Stunning sunsets!

This is where we find ourselves as we open the book of Joshua.  The fabulous, promised land awaits!  Swing wide the gate and enter!   It’s all yours!

In Joshua 5:13-15 Jesus Christ himself appears on the scene, as the Commander of the Army of the LORD.

As the Commander of the Army of the LORD, Jesus speaks encouragement to Joshua (the newly appointed Commander of the Army of Israel).

The book of Joshua goes on to recount the victorious conquest of the land, and the settlement of God’s chosen people in their new homeland.  The book of Joshua celebrates God as Commander and Defender!

Joshua’s name means “Yahweh is Salvation.”   Joshua himself is a picture of Jesus Christ.   Jesus is our salvation!

The book of Joshua celebrates God’s faithfulness!   God is the ultimate promise keeper.  “Not one of the good promises which the LORD had made to the house of Israel failed; all came to pass.”  – Joshua 21:45

We might be living several thousand years removed from the events of the book of Joshua, yet God is every bit as faithful to us today as He was then!  God’s promises stand firm!

“Be strong and very courageous.  Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.  Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.  Then you will be prosperous and successful.  Have not I commanded you?  Be strong and courageous.  Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”   – Joshua 1:7-9
