Hummingbird Dance!

Hummingbird Dance!

The hummingbird babies have graduated from the nest and have launched out into the great big world! … and as such, have started coming to the hummingbird feeder. Suddenly there are 4 or 5 new half-size hummingbirds at the feeder! Exciting!

I can’t help but wonder, “How did they know there was food here?” Did their hummingbird parents somehow tell them? Or perhaps, show them?

All last week you could tell the babies were still figuring out the hummingbird rules of society … such as: how to share the feeder, how to leave when someone else shows up wanting to eat, how to hold back when someone is already there, and how to chase each other away.

At first, they weren’t quite sure … they almost perched together to eat, but weren’t quite sure if they should do that or not.

As the week progressed, they became more and more confident … so that they are now quite proficient at chasing each other away.

They dart, and hover! … up, hover! … down and off across the yard! … zipping back, hover high! … hover near. Sip …. hover … sip … hover … sip …hover! I love to watch their dance!

Thank you God for the joy of watching the hummingbirds dance!
