Gratitude … for sounds.

Gratitude … for sounds.

Have you ever thought to be grateful for sounds?
To be honest, I haven’t really.

I usually don’t even stop to think about the sounds I’m hearing as I go throughout my day.

I just now got back home from the grocery store, and as I was carrying my purchases into the house there were two little birds whose enthusiastic chirping caught my attention.   I stopped mid-stride (grocery bags in arms) and pulled out my Merlin Bird ID App.    It immediately identified them as Pacific Wrens.

Cool! I’ve never heard of a Pacific Wren before.

But then again, how many times have I actually heard little Pacific Wrens without really “hearing” them at all??    Probably a lot is my guess  …  their little forest songs blending into the background noise as I obliviously go throughout my days.

Or, another example:   I was standing on my front porch yesterday afternoon after getting back from the mail when I suddenly became aware of the sound of a chainsaw somewhere in our neighborhood, as well as two leaf blowers. I couldn’t help but be filled with gratitude for God’s protection in the recent windstorm.

The sound of the chainsaw and leaf-blowers meant people were strong and healthy to clean up their yards.   It meant properties were being taken care of.   It meant the storm was over.   So much to be thankful for  …  just from a simple sound.

I love to hear the sound of the rain on my roof!

I love to hear the sound of the gentle breeze stirring through the leafy boughs of the forest.

But to be honest, I’m also grateful for the frightening sounds of fierce wind gusts.   Those fierce wind gusts of this past week remind me (and all of us) that we are not as “invincible” as we all assume ourselves to be.   Those sounds remind us that we as humans are in fact quite fragile and weak when it comes to the power of nature.   Those sounds remind me that God is greater!   God is stronger!    God can do whatever he wants!

So much  …  in a sound.

Hubby and I attended Worship Night at our church last night.   There were probably 2,000 people there  …  all of us singing our lungs and our hearts out in praise to Jesus!   Wow!   What an incredible sound!   So much to be grateful for!

I love the sound of the voices of those whom I love most!
So much to be grateful for!

There are the sounds of our beloved pet!

There are the sounds of the washer upstairs doing its thing.
The sound of a text message coming in from someone I love very much!

There are the sounds of the fireplace faintly popping and making noises as the metal heats up with a warm cozy fire.   And there are also the sounds of the fireplace faintly popping and making noises as the metal cools down  …  alerting me, subconsciously, that the fire needs another log or two.

What sounds in your life are you grateful for?

There are so many!   So many wonderful sounds which comprise every minute of every day!

Thank you God for sounds!     God, you didn’t have to give us sounds  …  but you did.   Because you love us.   Thank you God for all the wonderful sounds you have given us to make our life full and rich!
