It was hot! The Texas sun had blazed down all day long … zapping our energy … depleting our strength.
We were all weary. We were drained.
Evening was coming on and it was time for the final filming shots of the day. Once again, as a massive sea of humanity, we made our way over to the filming location. Once again we spread our blankets and mats on the ground.
Faces were flushed. We all huddled underneath our shade umbrellas. We were all sweaty! We were all dusty and dirty. We were all spent!
I sat on my mat in that hot grassy field, surrounded by 5,000 weary exhausted people, waiting for the film crew to get the shot set up, and the thought that came to mind was: Jesus cared! Jesus looked out at the crowds of weary people, who were just like us … and He cared!
In the account of Jesus feeding the 4,000, Mark notes that the people had been with Jesus for three days without anything to eat. It also specifically notes that Jesus didn’t want to send them away hungry because they might faint on the way.
Jesus cared!!
Now … over 2,000 years later … sitting among 5,000 weary exhausted people in a hot grassy field … I couldn’t help but be overcome by the thought that even now Jesus still cares! He cares about each one of us sitting here, on the brink of heat exhaustion. He cares!!
And when I get on that airplane tomorrow to go back to my home of endless grey and rain … Jesus will still care about me!
And each one of these 5,000 people surrounding me … each who has traveled great distance to be here … Jesus cares about each one! Tomorrow each will travel back to their individual homes … all across the US and across the world. Jesus knows each one of us! And Jesus cares about each one of us!!
No matter where we are … or what our need might be … Jesus knows! … and Jesus cares!!
