Huge tents had been set up … massive tents! Capable of holding a thousand people or more. Round tables and folding chairs were crammed in every square inch of shade underneath those tents.
But there were only two shade tents.
And there were 5,000 people.
Drained by the intense heat, hubby and I were among the latter ones to arrive at the tent area after our morning filming session had finished.
It was lunch time. People were everywhere!!
Crowds of people were lined up to get bottled waters and drinks! Crowds of people were lined up to get boxed lunches! Crowds of people were congregating en masse in front of the stage to hear Big Daddy Weave sing! Crowds of people filled every square inch of space underneath the shade tents!
Hubby and I navigated the crowds to pick up several bottles of water. Then navigated the crowds to pick up our boxed lunch.
Then there we stood … dazed … in the blazing sun. We were weary! We were hungry! And all we really wanted was to get out of the sun … and into some shade!
On the far side of the field a patch of open ground was available. We made our way to this open space, and wearily sank down onto our mat. We put up our shade umbrellas … and there we huddled … eating our boxed lunch with one hand, while holding our shade umbrella with the other.
Never before have I huddled gratefully beneath “shade at my right hand,” with the sun beating mercilessly down, and heat radiating off the dry parched ground all around!
Surely this is what the Psalmist was feeling when he wrote Psalm 121:5 – “The LORD watches over you— the LORD is your shade at your right hand.”
Thank you God for being the “shade at our right hand” … protecting and covering Your people in our current world which is such a parched dry place!
