Last week, the advent of December brought with it the advent of snow! A lot of snow. Our driveway was buried in deep snow. The roads of our neighborhood were buried in deep snow.
But last week also happened to be the first week of a brand-new job for a dear sweet someone in my household. Even though snow blocked the passage of the roads … a destination must be reached!
And so … a low-clearance vehicle headed out to brave the snowy roads.
When driving a low-clearance vehicle through deep snow, the undercarriage of the car becomes somewhat of a “snowplow” … “plowing” a path through the snow as the “petal is put to the metal.”
All was proceeding ok, until, while “gunning it” up a small hill with a sharp 90-degree turn at the top … an oncoming vehicle was met coming around the corner from the opposite direction. Alas … maneuvering for the oncoming vehicle to pass resulted in the low-clearance vehicle becoming hopelessly stuck in deep snow!
The destination could not be reached. It was very despairing!
The advent of December brings with it the Christmas Season of Advent! Why exactly are we celebrating the Christmas Season of Advent??
All humanity longs to reach the destination of Heaven and eternal life! What a fabulous destination to reach!
And so, just like the low-clearance vehicle was doing a pretty good job of “plowing” through the snow and making it up the hill, so also all humanity is trying to “plow through life” and “make it up the hill” to Heaven.
“Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart.” – Psalm 24:3-4
But alas … just like the low-clearance vehicle ran into a problem getting up the hill and became hopelessly stuck in the snow … so also, all humanity has a “low clearance” problem … we are not able to “make it up the hill” to Heaven. All of humanity is hopelessly stuck in sin!
“There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” – Romans 3:10-12
“The LORD looks down from Heaven on the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. All have turned aside, they have together become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.” – Psalm 14:2-3
“There is not a righteous man on earth who does what is right and never sins.” – Ecclesiastes 7:20
But all is not despair. There is hope!
Even though we are not able to go up to God or reach the destination of Heaven by our own efforts … God has chosen to come down to us!
Jesus left Heaven, and came down to earth … to “shovel” us out of the sin we are stuck in. Jesus did all the work! Not only that … Jesus has “plowed the road” for us! Jesus has cleared the road to Heaven for us! We now have a way to reach the destination of Heaven! Amazing!!
This is why we celebrate the Christmas Season of Advent!!
“God made Him [Jesus] who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him [Jesus] we might become the righteousness of God.” – 2 Corinthians 5:21
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” – John 14:6
The background photo for today shows our plowed road. In the same way, Jesus has “plowed the road” to Heaven. But … there is only one road by which we can get to Heaven … the only way to get to Heaven is by traveling the road which Jesus has “plowed.”
Many people think they can choose a number of different roads to get to Heaven. Every one of those roads will leave them hopelessly stuck in “sin.” There is only one road which has been “plowed” of sin.
There is only one road by which we can reach the destination of Heaven. And that is the way made by Jesus Christ!
This is why we celebrate the Christmas Season of Advent! Jesus came! And Jesus “plowed” the road of sin … to clear a way to Heaven for us!
Thank you Jesus!
