Why can’t I hear anything??

Why can’t I hear anything??

I was just now getting ready to start the dreaded task of cleaning the toilets.  To make the task more bearable, I turned my music on to one of my favorite songs.  However  …  no music came from my phone.

What’s up with that??

I could clearly see on my phone screen that the song was playing:

I knew my phone wasn’t connected to the Bose portable speaker.   So, there was no reason my phone shouldn’t be playing the music.

I went and double-checked the Bose portable speaker.  It was for sure turned off.

Hubby happens to be working from home today, so I took the opportunity to gripe to him, during a brief free moment he had.   He quickly took a look at my phone, tapped a couple of magical buttons to check the settings  …  and informed me that my phone was indeed actually playing the song  –  the volume was just turned down too low.   Hubby pressed the volume button, and voila!  …  insta-music!

Hahaha!  I felt really stupid!

How often in our life do we expect to hear from God  –  but just like I couldn’t hear the music on my phone  …  we can’t hear God speaking to us.

We open up our Bible to read what God has to say to us.   But as our eyes scan the words on the page, we don’t hear anything in our soul.

We head out to face our day.   As we are bustling about, “that person” (whoever it might be) does something which incites us!   “That was so totally wrong!” we think!

Something still and small deep inside us pops up in our head with:  “It’s not that big of a deal.  Let it go.”

But our soul volume is turned too low.   We don’t even hear it.

“That was so totally wrong!” we fixate.   “How could they do such a thing!!”

The still small voice deep inside our soul reiterates:  “It really doesn’t matter.   Let it go.”

An hour later we are still stewing over “that thing” which “that person” did!!   Annoyance!   We feel incensed.    We are offended.   “That was so rude!” we keep rehearsing in our head.   Little ideas start popping into our mind of all the “brilliant” ways we could let them know they are wrong!   “Brilliant” comebacks!   “Brilliant” retorts!

The still small voice deep inside our soul says flat-out:  “Be kind!”

Ok – I actually heard it that time.   That was clear.   No denying it.

The “soul volume” has just been turned up, just a little bit.

An hour later “that thing” pops into our mind again,  which “that person” did.  A few more “brilliant” responses also come to mind.

The still small voice deep inside our soul says to us flat-out:  “Be kind!”   This time accompanied by:  “Be wise!”

Oh yeah  …  that “brilliant” response wouldn’t be wise at all.   In fact, that “brilliant” response would be very dumb!

The day progresses.   Whenever “that thing” pops into our mind  –  immediately the still small voice surfaces with:  “Be kind!”

The soul volume is turned up now!   God is speaking.   I’m hearing it loud and clear now!

Be kind!”
Ok, ok.   I’m sorry God.   My attitude is wrong.   I’m not being kind at all.

Be wise!”
Ok, ok.   Yes, I agree  …  God please help me to be wise!

And then  …  “Be happy.”

Oh, that’s a new one.

You know God, you’re right  …  stewing about “that thing” and “that person” has robbed me of my joy.   I didn’t even realize it.   I’m sorry God.   Please restore my joy.   Please God, help me to be happy.

God is speaking to us!

The reason we might not be hearing could be because our “soul volume” is just turned down too low!
