Having an impact … which you will never see.

Having an impact … which you will never see.

During the winter, the sun shines in low through my windows  …  casting long shadows across my dining room floor.  As such, the shadow of the hummingbird feeder is prominently displayed on the floor …  along with the little flitting, darting shadows of the hummingbirds!

I love to sit at my dining room table (as I work on the blog) and notice out of my peripheral vision the hummingbird shadows flitting and darting back and forth!   This brings me so much joy!

My back is to the window.
I can’t actually see the hummingbirds at all.

But there are times I will pause mid-stride in whatever I’m doing and just sit and watch those little shadows dancing all around!

It brings me so much joy!

From the hummingbird’s perspective, the little bird could easily think that nobody at all is watching it.   After all, I’m inside.   The hummingbird is well-aware whenever I’m outside gathering firewood!  (as the wood box is nearby the hummingbird feeder).   But when I’m inside, the reflection off the windows makes it difficult to see what’s inside.

The little hummingbird probably has no idea I’m watching it.

Furthermore, my back is to the hummingbird  …  and I’m sitting perfectly still as I work on the computer.   There is basically no visible evidence that I am watching the hummingbird.   But I am.

In life, this same thing happens!

People are watching our life.

But there is no visible evidence.

We have no idea that anyone at all is watching what we do  …  or paying attention to what we say, or how we say it.   We have no idea the impact our actions are having on someone else.

Just like my back is to the hummingbird feeder  …  so also in life, someone’s “back might be to us.”  (metaphorically speaking)   And we have no idea that the sun is casting a shadow of our actions prominently on the floor, directly in the line of sight of that someone-else.

We might be minding our own business  …  doing our own thing  …  all the while, someone somewhere is sitting there just like I do at my dining room table.   Sitting perfectly still, yet paused mid-stride  …  captivated watching the shadows of the hummingbirds!   Delighting in their flitting and darting!

And finding joy  …  and maybe even hope  …  just by watching.

Someone . somewhere is watching.

Your life is having an impact.   Even if you can’t see it.
